I lived in Arizona for 40 years and have visited the Confederate Air Force hanger at Falcon Field in Mesa many times. Even got to go inside the B17 for a brief look once. Before I retired from the Salt River Project I flew over the Superstition Mts. and the north country many times in a helicopter; I wasn’t the pilot, patrolling transmission power lines for trouble. Once while doing this north of Phoenix and coming back to home base about a mile from touchdown, the engine froze up and the pilot put it in auto rotation and landed it in a parking lot almost like a normal landing. The pilot was a Viet Nam veteran and was shot down twice. I always said, if I fly in a helicopter, I wanted him as the pilot. Unfortunately, that won’t happen, he died about 3 months ago.
Before we left Arizona for Washington,we would now and then see them( the B17 or B25) on their way to or from some event. But that was 23 years ago. How time flies!!!!
